College Place Fire Department is proud to be the emergency services provider for the citizens of College Place, Washington. We feel that we provide the highest level of professional service available, with our primarily volunteer staff. Providing code enforcement, public education, ongoing training, and the willingness to serve, achieves this level of service. Our department is made up of community members who feel it is their responsibility to their community to give something back to it.
Our Mission is to minimize loss of life and property, and pain and suffering experienced by residents of the City of College Place, and the surrounding area, due to man-made or natural disasters. We will achieve this goal by providing the highest quality Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services.
In the 1940’s citizens of the town of College Place decided that they needed and wanted their own fire protection service. And by 1947 the fire department was incorporated. Since that time the department has made several changes- we now include EMS, Hazardous Materials, Rescue, Natural Cover Fires, Confined Space, and Low and High angle rescue, to the long list of emergency-type responses.
In 1993 the City of College Place chose a new direction for the Fire Department and the services it would continue to provide, by hiring it’s first-ever full time Fire Chief, Gary Reed. Chief Reed brought change to the department by instituting a “sleeper program,” forming formal auto-aid agreements with the City of Walla Walla, as well as many other programs. His leadership helped the Fire Department begin changing from a strictly emergency response program within the fire service, to a dedicated professional volunteer organization.
In 1997, Mike Spring took over as Fire Chief and continued to provide leadership to a growing Department, as well as providing for the needs of the ever-growing City. Through Chief Spring’s leadership and direction, the Department started a Resident Firefighter Program, increased the size of its membership, proactively started an inspection program, an Appointment Keepers Transportation Service program, and led a Bond Campaign for a new fire station, which was built in 2001.
In 2005 Patrick Shipp was hired as our new Fire Chief, bringing us into a new era. His goals for our department are to maintain its professionalism through hiring the best volunteers and full-time employees to serve our community, and to work ever closer with our neighboring departments through training, response, and improving the lines of communication. Chief Shipp left the department in March of 2008 and Firefighter/Training Officer David Winter is currently serving as interim chief.
