The wastewater department is in a constant state of evolution. As the regulations and technologies change, the department responds to meet the challenges and adapt to new methods. Currently, we are awaiting the completion of the Walla Walla River Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study which will have a decided impact on the treatment plant and the storm water system.
The department is looking into several areas of improvements in anticipation of future needs. Staff are working constantly and thoughtfully on a program of improvements to give the treatment process everything that is required to insure our ability to meet water quality standards in the future. A program of upgrading and replacing portions of the collections system will also be necessary.
Where are we going? The answer is ahead, to offer the best possible service at the most economical price!
HOW DO WE GET THERE?
The treatment and collections divisions are constantly working on ways to improve our services and save on costs. Unfortunately, many of the things that need to be done will require the increased expenditure of funds. The wastewater department is funded through user fees rather than tax money. The cost of compliance with the ever increasing regulatory requirements will remain with us. Modification of the infrastructure will not come without a price.
The wastewater department will continue to rely on a well trained and experienced staff to maintain a high level of economical service. The department staff are all certified professionals. All staff must obtain at least ten hours of training credit per year to maintain their certifications. The wide variety of expertise among the staff leads to innovative and creative solutions to the challenges that face us now and will confront us in the future.
